Mekatilili wa Menza was one of the coastal heroes who led the Giriama against the British rule. She was arrested and forced to work in sisal plantations as a prisoner. Her efforts earned her a lot of respect and honor from the Giriama people. She eventually died in 1920's in Ganze sub county. The peace walk is usually conducted some weeks before the Mekatilili festival that comes every 13th day of August each year. This year's walk was held between 16th and 22nd of July. The event included a walk which started from Kwale county, via Mombasa county and ended in Kilifi county. The participants included old and middle aged men and women from all Mijikenda tribes. The climax was at the Governor's office where a speech was given to mark the end of the walk.
