Mekatilili wa Menza was one of the coastal heroes who led the Giriama against the British rule. She was arrested and forced to work in sisal plantations as a prisoner. Her efforts earned her a lot of respect and honor from the Giriama people. She eventually died in 1920's in Ganze sub county. A peace walk is usually conducted some weeks before the Mekatilili festival that comes every 13th day of August each year.
Commemorations to be spearheaded by the Kaya Elders, which include feasting, dancing and ritual performances.
